Why I Love Mornings & You Should Too

Why I Love Mornings & You Should Too

I’ve always been a pretty early riser. Even before college when I had to get up for practice, I was never really someone who could sleep in too late, even if I wanted.

Someone once said they have “a fear of sleeping through daylight” and when I heard this, I realized I can definitely relate to that statement.

Sometimes I do sleep in until 7 or 8 but I believe the morning is when the day is at its best.

I'm easily a morning person. I enjoy the time when the rest of the world is still asleep. It’s calming to me knowing there is nothing you need to be doing at that time and it belongs solely to me.

The morning is always brand new. No matter what you chose to do with your time in the morning, make sure it sets you off to a good start to the day. The way you begin your day will likely predict what the rest of your day looks like. If you roll out of bed frustrated and frazzled, it will likely take you a little bit to get yourself back into a good mood. We’ve all had that morning and it isn’t my favorite way to start the day.

Lately, I’ve started setting my alarm for five minutes before I actually want to wake up. I’m usually the type to get out of bed immediately when my alarm goes off but this way, I’m able to have a slow few minutes before I get out of bed. I like to use these five minutes to think about the day ahead of me and get my thoughts in line for the day. It allows me to center myself before I complicate my mind with a thousand other things.

The first thing I do six out of seven days a week is go to practice. That means the morning is quick and very little of the time is simply for me. But my absolute favorite part of that is getting to watch the sunrise (Oklahoma has some of the best). I wake up every morning and spend a four hours with my team and to me, that’s a great way to start the morning.

Sundays are my “sleep in” day but I love waking up with no alarm and spending the first hour or so of my day eating a good breakfast, drinking coffee and doing whatever it is that I want to do to start the day slow. I try to stay away from watching Netflix or anything like that in the morning. I love writing, reading, sometimes watching a few YouTube videos. I find that if I start my day with some morning inspiration, it’s a game changer for the rest of the day.

No matter what time you wake up or how much time you have to spare in the morning, the way you chose to start your morning is what truly matters. You might not get a slow morning everyday, but you can use the time you have to make it your own.

I’ve also found that even though you might know the difference in five minutes of sleep, your body really doesn’t. And the difference that it will make in your day will be greater than the difference in the sleep you get.

At this point, I'm sorta just babbling but I really wanted to share my thoughts on taking time for ourselves in the morning. Start fresh and start it right.

xoxo, emily
