Why Group Training & Fitness Matters

Why Group Training & Fitness Matters

Growing up, I was always on a team. A soccer team, a swim team, a cross country team, etc. (Lord knows my parents let me try every sport under the sun until I found the one...thanks Mom and Dad). Most every child has an experience with being on a team, and it's at this time that we learn the importance of having people around us who have the same goal.

Accountability // It's a lot easier to get up and go when you know the person beside you is doing the same thing. Often times you'll find yourself facing a hard workout or you feel unmotivated or you just simply have something better to do - if you know someone is expecting you to show up at a certain time to work, you will be more likely to be there and be prepared.

Common Goal // This is especially present when you're on a team - somewhere you can work toward a goal as a whole rather than on your own. This is one of the most empowering feelings because you have an opportunity: you can sit back and allow the team to carry you, or you can rise up and fight to attain that goal you all want so badly.

I think this is where we learn more about ourselves and what we truly want, and it even translates to every type of team you are apart of. It is necessary to have this experience and time as part of a whole in order to grow as an individual.

Community // Where there's a team or a group, there are also like-minded individuals who decided to join that group or team for a reason. My question is: what can we, as individuals, do to contribute positively to that group? Whether this is a group you joined for an hour in a fitness class, your team of four years, your weekly running groups - how can you make a positive impact on the community created?

I'm prompting these questions because I've encountered these three pieces of a team through my time with rowing and even this summer as I've trained in the offseason in various group fitness classes. I'm continually thankful for the opportunity I get everyday to be apart of a team. What team opportunities are you excited about on a daily basis? Start a conversation in the comments below.
